CATHY WAITE Filmmaker Photographer I was 8 when I was given my 110 cartridge camera. The small black precious cartridges were used sparingly, and I can still feel the anticipation, many months later, waiting for the folder of photos to arrive in the post. Disappointing as the results may have been, for the most part, my finger was an integral part of the image, there was always one that thrilled. I’ve been obsessed with image making ever since; photography, filmmaking, art and in cliched fashion it was the black plastic Kodak 110 camera that helped me see the light…

4o years later, the 110 camera and a host of other cameras have been consigned to the analogue grave yard. Plymouth Art College feels like eons ago, but the four years I spent studying photography and film fired my passion for the craft and aided my entry into the TV world, as a self-shooting producer/director and editor. I worked on a broad spectrum of broadcast programming and produced across a diverse range of subject matter; entertainment, documentary, factual and drama, for ITV and the BBC and for many corporate clients. My role was as varied as the type of production I have worked on, from the formatting of original light entertainment series for ITV, shooting documentaries to working on pre-developed formats as a self shooting director for BBC1.

I have visual flair as a camera operator and am a skilled editor combining this with my direction, my work has a distinctive look and feel and I pride myself in my versatility, from highly original filmmaking to the discipline of a populist show. I have a particular interest in food, travel and lifestyle programming. I have won three RTS awards and been nominated for two others.

My last TV credits were The Hungry Sailors, ITV and East Bites West, 24 Kitchen, made for Denhams where I also developed pilots with Yotam Ottolenghi, Jack Stein, Emma Bridgewater, Admirable Crichton and Matt Dawson.

My love of photography has run in parallel with my television career and the advent of the cinematic DSLR has enabled me to do both, literally at the same time. I undertake a wide variety of photographic assignments, specialising in portraiture, food, lifestyle and travel.

That’s the formal bit.

Today, I am passionate about image making. I love to tell stories either with one photograph or with moving image; the stories of people, their food, the land, the sea and travels, the journey of life. I work on projects that inspire me and for people who inspire. I am currently working on a website seainhereyes.com, an online homage to the sea; films, photography, art, writing, recipes, anecdotes, travel notes. An aspirational guide for sea lovers the world over launching in 2016 and a culmination of a lifetime obsession.

I met my partner, the astrologer and broadcaster, Michele Knight in 2014 and she changed my life. We live and work on the South Devon coast, and travel making films together. My son Jack, has such a talent, and I watch with pride as he begins his filmmaking journey.

Today I am happy
